How to Winterize Your Outdoor Living Space in Nebraska

By the Nebraska Backyard Living team · October 26, 2026

Covered outdoor living space with fire pit prepared for a Nebraska winter

A Nebraska winter does not damage outdoor spaces evenly — it finds the one unprotected water line, the one unsealed counter, the one cover left to pool with ice. Thirty minutes of fall preparation protects tens of thousands of dollars of outdoor living investment. Here is the checklist our own crews follow.

Water Is the Enemy — Start There

  • Shut off and drain outdoor kitchen water lines — an undrained line bursts by December
  • Blow out irrigation and water feature lines, then winterize pumps
  • Empty and cover fountains; pumps come indoors if they are removable
  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses so spigots do not freeze back into the wall

Protect the Surfaces Freeze-Thaw Attacks

Concrete, pavers, and natural stone all survive our winters — when water cannot sit in them. Clear leaves so stains do not set, check that drainage still flows away from the patio, and reseal surfaces on their recommended schedule. Never use rock salt on pavers or stamped concrete; sand or calcium magnesium acetate is the safe de-icer.

Kitchens, Fire Features & Furniture

  • Grill: deep clean, then cover — grease attracts moisture and corrosion
  • Counters: wipe down and cover stone or concrete tops on exposed outdoor kitchens
  • Gas fire features: shut the supply, cover the burner pan so meltwater cannot pool
  • Furniture: clean, dry, and store cushions indoors; cover frames even under a patio cover

The Structures That Should Not Need Winterizing

Well-built pergolas, covers, and sunrooms are engineered for snow load and need nothing more than a glance — that is the point of building them correctly. If your cover concerns you every forecast, it was not built for Nebraska, and that conversation is worth having. Our seasonal preparation guide covers the other three seasons.
