Outdoor Kitchen Cost in Omaha: What Nebraska Homeowners Should Know
By the Nebraska Backyard Living team · February 12, 2026

An outdoor kitchen is the highest-intent project in outdoor living — nobody builds one casually. It is also the project where pricing opacity frustrates homeowners most. After 22+ years of building custom outdoor kitchens across the Omaha metro, here is the honest anatomy of what they cost and why.
The Eight Line Items That Shape the Number
1. Layout
A straight grill island costs the least. An L-shape adds a serving and seating leg. A U-shape creates a full cooking cockpit. Each leg adds structure, countertop, and finishing — but also function. Layout should follow how you cook and host, not the other way around.
2. Appliances
The grill is the anchor; side burners, refrigeration, ice makers, and sinks each add cost and utility. Outdoor-rated appliances are non-negotiable in Nebraska — indoor units fail fast and void warranties. Buy once, buy outdoor-rated.
3. Countertops
Granite, concrete, and porcelain all perform outdoors here when properly installed and sealed. This is a surface you will touch every single time you use the space — worth choosing deliberately.
4. Cabinetry and structure
- Marine-grade polymer or stainless cabinets — not interior-grade anything
- Masonry block or steel-frame structure — never wood in wet zones
- Stone, brick, or stucco finishes that tie to your home
5. Utilities
Gas lines, electrical circuits, and water supply require licensed trades and permits. Utilities are the least photogenic line item and the one that most determines whether the kitchen is genuinely functional or just decorative.

6. Shade and shelter
A patio cover or pergola over the kitchen is the single biggest usability upgrade: shade in July, shelter during storms, and protection for your appliances and finishes year-round.
7. Lighting
Task lighting over the grill, ambient lighting for the bar — you will cook at night more than you expect. Plan circuits during the build, not after.
8. The fire feature pairing
Most of our Omaha kitchen projects pair with a fire feature nearby — the kitchen handles dinner, the fire handles the evening. Designing both together costs less than retrofitting later.
Where Homeowners Overspend (and Underspend)
- Overspend: oversized appliance packages that never get used — match the kitchen to your actual menu
- Underspend: counter landing space — you need room on both sides of the grill
- Underspend: the cover — an unprotected kitchen sits empty exactly when you want it most
- Overspend: finishing the whole space at once instead of phasing with a master plan
